"As a servant of Necra, you embody the sanctity of her domain, ensuring the dead rest peacefully within the earth. You are the bane of grave robbers and necromancers, and your holy magic brings undead back into Necra's embrace: the only rightful place for lost souls."
You're the thankless bastard who makes sure the dead stay put. With trusty shovel in hand and cart in tow, your job is to patrol the town of Vanderlin and it's surrounding claims to bury whatever bodies you can. If you get lucky, you might stumble upon a body with a handful of mammon to spend at the inn… but the other side of the zenny is ending up as one of the shambling horde.
Bare Minimum: Bury bodies people bring to you and give them proper burial rites. Help with funerals if a noble dies.
Gravetenders start with their most essential tool: the shovel. A shovel is required for digging graves and burying the corpses afterwards. To do so, interact with the shovel in your hand to wield it with both hands. Use the SCOOP intent on any “dirt” tile to start digging a hole. Deposit the dirt to another nearby tile and repeat until the hole becomes a pit. SCOOP some dirt from the dirt pile you've created or another nearby tile and place it onto the pit to turn it into a buried grave. If you ever lose your shovel, there are spares in the equipment room opposite your living quarters. If these run out, you can commission a blacksmith or craft one!
Other tools are available around your living quarters, the doors of which you can unlock with the “Old Key” you start with. You'll likely want one of the Iron Lampterns from inside your bedrooms, which you can light with the flint nearby and put on your hip. Cloth and needles are in the equipment room, and though intended to help prepare noble corpses, it's more often than not something you'll want to take with you if you're patrolling outside of the town to patch wounds or prevent soon-to-rise bodies from biting you.
In order to perform proper burials, you will also need a pile of copper zenny and sticks. You can bundle sticks together by right clicking on one with another. There should also be a pile of sticks in a chest at the top of the graveyard.
Before you head out, you may also want to consider taking a cart. If you insist on only burying bodies within your cemetery, it'll be vital to carrying piles of stiffs. Beyond that, it can also carry useful items such as rations, sticks, weapons, or dead people's loot.
After Gravediggers were turned to Gravetenders, the servants of Necra, they've obtained a number of spells for assisting in their role. They begin with two: Lesser Miracle and Burial rites. Lesser Miracle can be used to heal a selected bodypart, Burial Rites can be used in place of a stick-cross placed over the grave.
After praying enough, you'll gain two more spells: Speak with Dead and Churn Undead. Speak With Dead lets you pull a spirit from the Underworld to speak with! Churn Undead will set ALL undead within five tiles of you on fire! They may also explode. Some antagonists, like the Vampire Lord, may overpower your churn, but most mobs are free game!
While Gravediggers were fairly helpless against a single Deadite, now they can be fought off a little easier. Remember: THE UNDERMAIDEN REBUKES!
After someone dies, their remains will begin to rot. Eventually, they may rise as a dreaded “Deadite". The eyes turn white, they smell fouler than ever before, and they walk as undying, flesh-eating monstrosities. The restless dead can and will overtake a kingdom that does not prepare for them. Be swift, not just to prevent the corpse from rising, but to allow the dead player to pass on and return to the lobby far faster.
To properly bury a corpse, do the following:
With that, they should be buried! Anyone who unearths them without the Graverobber trait will be cursed for ten minutes!
Unfortunately, most of the time, cadavers won't be delivered to you. To keep up with the rising Deadite menace, an upstart undertaker must go on the prowl! While you're not obligated to go search the forests, trekking through the sewers or the lesser-traveled streets of the city can often reveal dead bodies. The outskirts of the town are also a good place- though beware of ambushes. It's recommended you pair up with another Gravetender and/or some hired help if you insist on adventuring through the Murderwood in Necra's name.
