As the guard, you must follow the laws set out in the Tome of Justice
by default. However, the sovereign may change the laws as they see fit.
It's important to note that you aren't given a free licence to assault anyone you want, doing this is frowned upon and could lead you in trouble. Even if the person is apart of a discrminated race.
Other than this, the captain themselves may receive direct orders from the ruler which are important to know about. They could be orders such as naming someone an outlaw without officially making them so, or raiding certain places and other things they might think of, which is why coordination with the captain is vital.
On occasion, you'll find that the keep and the church enter into conflicts. While it is true you obey the captain, you are still a person possessing free will. This means that you may sometimes have to choose between your religious conviction (the church) and your loyalty to the King's rule.
You are encouraged to think it through and choose depending on your character, and the events that happened in the round.
As a member of the garrison, when you spawn you'll be given the choice between multiple classes, each with different gear. Choose wisely as the way you'll play will be affected by it.
However no matter the loadout you'll take, you'll always get a keyring for the garrison building as well as the emote verb "haltyell" who allow you to (unsurprisingly) yell "halt".
Its important to note as well that every guard will get specialized stats and skills alongside their gear.
