"Like a hound on a leash, you stand vigilant for your masters. You live better than the rest of the taffers in this shithole infact, you take shifts keeping the savages out next to your only friend. It will be a cold day in hell when your better half is slain, and nobody in this town will care. The nobility needs good men, and they only come in pairs."
You have one task but it is a task you must master in order to ensure the safety of the keep : Pulling levers.
However, if you fail at this task, then these pesky, filthy commoners will come in and flood the Keep, and nobody wants that. So you must remain vigilant.
Levers are simple, but you must remember, there are two of them. The inner gate, and the outer gate. Think of it like a sort of airlock, and only open one at a time to ensure nobody can just run through.
Great, now someone's locked between your gates, you are facing them, they are facing you, tensions rising and you think to yourself what are the conditions into letting someone inside ?
If they are none of the above, preform all of the following checks before allowing them in.
If all of these checks are good, then let them in, what harm could they do, right?
Remember to make sure the gate is always manned, if you need to rest, ask your partner (if they're alive, if not ask a guard) to take over for a bit. Then, if someone breaks in while you're asleep, it won't be your fault.
To help you in doing all of that, you aren't alone. You have yourself and your buddy-partner whom you can trust with your life. This exact buddy is the reason you have the possibility to go get yourself some snacks and possibly not get bored to death, be sure to coordinate with them whenever one must leave the post.
As a watchman, you aren't a proper garrison guard persay as you do have your own set of skills and gears to reflect the immobility of the job.
